First of all i wanted to do a superhero.
I am the biggest Batman fan in the world and wanted to
do something dark and gritty. That's how you feel when
you have just broken your leg in three places and been
dumped by your girlfriend.
I just couldn't feel it though. The designs
i that were coming out of my head were not going any where
and it had all been done before.
How many more caped avengers of the night do we need?
During my mourning period of my break
up and half way into my physio therapy. She came to me....
She phoned me out of the blue to see if i was ok. This
person that i had idolised for nearly 10 years. This crazy,
hard drinking, hard working, take no shit, hectic woman
that i had known since she was 15. Every guy fancied her
and i was privilaged to be her good friend as i was 10
years older and there wasn't any R.
Kelly business going on there if you know what i mean.
A year went by and we lost touch as i
was in my busiest period of my life as an illustrator.
My agent Eddie Butcher was busting my chops to get my
comic idea back on from off the shelf after giving me
a Yoda speech.
Then she came into my circle again and
all was clear..
this time i saw her she had changed. Her hairdo, her mannerisms,
her undying love for her boyfriend Byrnes, her love of
her cats, Chilli and Freddie. But she was still this hectic,
gotta get things done, great woman and that inspired me.
New York was the perfect setting. I go
there every year and my love for the city grows every
day.
Especially thanks to Kevin Fitzpatrick, author of "A
Journey into Dorothy Parkers New York" and www.
nycbp.com
who shows me all around Manhattan.
New York is the back drop for all of the best superheroes
i believed this was fate.
My initial sketches of Katie came from
inspiration of people that everyone knew. Adriana Lima
and Thandie Newton to speak. Initially the character was
going to be a rather pathetic creature, desperate for
the right job and yearning for love but she was scrapped
and you can see this from my early sketches. I was always
attracted to strong women. Women that didn't moan about
their weight or how they couldn't find a man..they just
got up and did something about it.
Women that became top managers in there job's by hard
work and cunning. I loved the fact that whilst your average
girl would complain that the stronger willed girl's would
be silent and some how get into position's of power.
Then we revamped her basing her on my
best friend and keeping her identity anonymous for her
own sakes. We came up with the idea that the reader would
only see her in cartoon form enhancing a real life "Secret
Identity". I think this has worked to great effect
and believe me she loves it.
Katie's adventures would be a mix of
a real life "Mission Impossible" mixed with
the normal dilemnas of being a hard working, modern ,21st
century woman.
We wanted her to think like " How am i going to get
these press releases to Warner's on the lower east side
and still get to Midtown to see my other client before
getting my hair done and dropping of the key's to my flat
to my boyfriend........in 2hours!!"
We then thought of doing that for the
characters around her basing them all on real people we
know, real life situations we have been in and fictional
stories all in comic book format.
I then needed the tools to show this
creation to the world and met up with a tech wizard named
Karl Allen -Muncey. This guy reads HTML like Neo reads
Matrix-Code and had the site done in a week!!
Thanks to Karl and Katie Rogers i can express myself and
create the most unlikely hero for you all to enjoy.
